The Hermannslauf – from the Hermannsdenkmal monument near Detmold to Sparrenburg Castle in Bielefeld – makes April 26th 2009 a running event for everyone. With an overall distance of 30.7 km, it has delighted an international field of runners every year for more than three decades, as well as thousands of spectators along the route full of natural beauty.

The Leineweber-Markt (Linen weaver Market) is Bielefeld’s oldest street fair with the richest traditions. For three days at the end of every May, the city centre of Bielefeld transforms itself into an open air stage.

Visitors from the region and far away enjoy an entertaining mix of street theatre, cabaret, folklore, jazz, rock and other shows – and all for free. The nostalgic hustle and bustle of a fairground and activities for children are ideal complements to the staged events.

A small miracle of joie de vivre, an international festival celebrating multi-culturalism, a parade of masks, costumes, and fantastic installations: the Carnival of Cultures symbolises all this.

It unites all generations, with around 2,000 participants and 70 groups from across the world annually performing to as many as 100,000 spectators – a stimulation of the senses, an unlimited array of colours, rhythms and moving images.

Bielefeld is a main venue of the 2010 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup! 16 teams from all continents are taking part. The FIFA U-20-Frauen-WM Stadion at Melanchthonstraße will host ten of the 32 games. Group stage matches, one of the quarter finals, a semi-final, the third place playoff and the final on 1st August all take place in Bielefeld. Before and during the World Cup, there will be a wide-ranging programme of arts, cultural and sporting events related to girls’ and women’s football.

The Bielefeld Dance Festival offers dance classes and the realisation of individual choreographies in addition to four performances by modern dance companies. The choice of ensembles is testament to the impressive variety in international contemporary dance. The main theme of performances in 2009 is ”Asia”.

Medieval hustle and bustle with the backdrop of historic Sparrenburg Castle, Bielefeld’s favourite visitor destination. Every July, a wild troupe of magicians, storytellers, traders and vagrants bring to life the times of preachers selling indulgences, of minstrels and the Black Death, and of wanton high spirits. Hawkers, peddlers and craftsmen dominate the medieval market with their wares. For three days, the Middle Ages return to Bielefeld.

There are no vineyards in the Teutoburg Forest and the region is not renowned for wines. Despite that, in 2010 Bielefeld stages its 29th Wine Festival in the old part of town.
In atmospheric surroundings right in Bielefeld’s ”front room”, the Alter Markt, and at Niedernstraße and Altstädter Kirchplatz, tastings of a multitude of wines from Germany’s wine growing regions are held.

On 12th September 2010, Bielefeld’s urban motorway, the Stadtautobahn, with its total length of more than 8km, is the setting for a special sports event for all. On the 6th ”Stadtwerke run & roll day”, the multi-lane Ostwestfalendamm is closed to all vehicles and open instead to runners, skaters, walkers and wheelchair users. The programme of events has a variety of competitions for runners and skaters. The day also includes a family event.
